Not Soylent Green. That’s made of people.
Green drinks made of veggies are considerably more appetizing and healthy.
In my adventures in juicing to improve my health and manage weight, I look for recipes. I stopped looking for them by taste. Instead I look for vegetable and fruit combinations by what they do. For example, if I need a pick-me-up I usually look for combinations that include beets, cucumber, orange, spinach, lime etc. These are antioxidants, good for hydration, higher in sugar, and are good for that after lunch sludge. Want to detox from something? Find combinations with fennel and celery.
So I ran across this site to help me figure out what to do with the produce I have on tap. Juice Recipes does exactly that! Useful tool. But beware. Sometimes it can be a little “off.”
I wanted a good green drink. Like with any vegetable diet we need all of our nutrients. I measure that by color: red, blue, purple, green, orange. I am not a dietician. I just know that a pretty plate is a healthy plate. Just look at how ugly a plate of chicken nuggets is. A nugget of meat product is a gross thought isn’t it.
I entered what I had in stock and at the top one was labelled “Dr Oz’s Green Drink.” It has a lot of good stuff in it.
Here is the recipe from Juice Recipes:
- Apples – 2 medium (3″ dia)
- Celery – 3 stalk, large (11″-12″ long)
- Cucumber – 1 cucumber (8-1/4″)
- Ginger – 1/2 thumb (1″ dia)
- Lemon (with rind) – 1/2 fruit (2-3/8″ dia)
- Lime (with rind) – 1 fruit (2″ dia)
- Parsley – 1 bunch
- Spinach – 2 cup
Healthy, right? Until you drink it. It is like drinking smelling salts. Pungent, bitter, spicy. Lip-puckering bitter and sour. With the rind? Don’t do that. Cut back on the ginger as well. I added sweet potato and that still didn’t cut down on the taste. But it sure as hell woke me up.
Here is he “real” recipe from the Dr Oz site:
Makes 3-4 servings (about 28-30 oz)
- 2 cups spinach
- 1/2 cucumber
- 1/4 head of celery
- 1/2 bunch parsley
- 1 bunch mint
- 3 carrots
- 2 apples
- 1/4 orange
- 1/4 lime
- 1/4 lemon
- 1/4 pineapple
Much more refreshing. I don’t like pineapple so I substitute with strawberries. Yum. No, really. This is a refreshing green, like walking through a forest in the morning. That sounds like an old Massengill or Peppermint Patty commercial so I might be overstating it a bit. But it’s good. Feel free to cut down on the lemon, lime, and ginger too.
